- Wing Notes: Caution: many variations and reproductions. WASP wings are extremely rare because only 1074 aviatrix graduated. In the 27 months of service, they flew most Army Air Force aircraft with 38 dying in the line of duty. Initially, women assigned to Air Transport Command, Ferry Division, wore Air Transport Command Civilian Pilot wings until regulation WASP wings were issued. The initial 7 classes were awarded the unofficial graduation wings bearing the class designation (Classes 43-1 to 7: 319th 1 & 2; 318th 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Class 43-8 received the official lozenge (diamond) wings. As for the graduation wings, variations exist even within each class as the base wing was modified from stock and the shields were hand made by engravers. So, the “original” graduation wings were made by local jewelers and probably replacements. Then, the lozenge wings were the original issued, replacements, and reunion wings. And, unfortunately, many graduation and lozenge wings are reproductions or fakes.
